This exciting project is a new slant on the traditional 'identity' project used in many school art departments, except this version does not depend on the ability to draw a self portrait, but rather uses found objects and symbolism to create deep, meaningful pieces of art. What's more, the project embeds cross-curricular learning, integrating Religious Education themes on identity with Mathematics of Net Making and construction of 3D shapes. The download contains a full Scheme of Work and four PowerPoint presentations as well as photocopiable NET templates, artist links and student examples to help you. This was one of my favourite projects as a teacher!

Advanced Stage drawing has been designed for students approx 13-16 years or those who would assess their current ability as: “I’m quite good at drawing, I draw often, but I want to improve so that I can draw and shade difficult things.” At this level of drawing you are challenged to construct, measure, shade and draw a more complex group of objects, rendering shading and detail with greater accuracy and precision. Pop Art gets a 21st Century facelift! This a Contemporary Scheme aimed at improving thinking skills and asks deep, Essential Questions of your students to learn how Modern Art has evolved into a thriving contemporary movement. And instead of just making a bland Pop Art style picture, the students are challenged to think about how the media affects their life. I’ve taught this unit to young children and exam classes alike with great results. Crucial to the project's success is the student refining and developing their ideas in light of peer and self evaluation. Includes resources on thinking skills and the 'Pointless' game to help you teach the thinking skills your students need. This project is very motivational and can be used year after year with constantly different results, my students loved it.

This 3D sculpture unit focuses on creating a whole class 3D mural in the style of contemporary artist Tony Cragg whilst at the same time teaching colour theory and craft techniques. It develops visual literacy and the ability to analyse art work and incorporates three different ways of making the final piece from cheap, common everyday items. It is slightly more expensive due to copyright royalties of Tony's work, but you will have a great school mural at the end of it. It comes with a student booklet, photocopiable resources, presentation, lesson plan and templates for making a large classroom art piece.

Learn about the fabulous birds of New Guinea and how they have evolved into some of the most stunning creatures on the planet. Teach sketchbook recording techniques, art methods and my own technique of making birds using PVA glue. This is a lovely craft project for younger art students and is such a huge topic, it can easily be developed into a cross-curricular theme with science, geography and maths. One for younger children.

Complete with beautiful supporting illustrations, a teaching Powerpoint a detailed Lesson Plan with full instructions, fish illustrations and a cross-hatching animation, this 4-6 hour project teaches students to illustrate fish in detail using cross-hatching pen and ink techniques, before inventing their own weird and crazy fish to draw, design and make in a variety of ways. The tutorials show you methods of making fish in clay, wire or 3D. Great for Primary or key stage 3 year 7 to 8.

This lesson challenges students to invent a secret language then use it to draw in an abstract way to communicate words and phrases in their own unique style. By comparing this to abstract artists they will be able to better understand the language of drawing. Suitable for most age ranges, this very flexible project combines digital photography with the art of observational drawing. It is a great project for getting some quality, expressive drawing work in student’s portfolios at exam stage or for teaching younger students to ‘see’ more closely. A very expressive and open lesson, students are free to express what they see in a variety of styles. I've had great results from this as a topic for less able students or teaching experimentation with materials. I've used it as a GCSE project and in the Primary phase. It's easy, effective and fun!
